Larry Schillenkamp's
Background & Philosophy
I started training dogs and horses at 15 years of age with knowledge
passed on from an old uncle.  He was not formally trained but had a lot
of dog smarts.

My formal training began while I was in the United States Army.  I was
asked about my hobbies, which were fishing and dog training.
As an outcome of my answer, the Army sent me to a school in Berlin,
Germany to begin basic obedience and protection training with dogs.  I
excelled in the class and  became an instructor at the school.

A few years after my release from the Army,  I joined the German
Shepherd Dog Club of Louisiana.  An instructor, Lloyd Favrot,
approached me and suggested that with my potential I should show
dogs and compete in obedience. Shortly after, I also joined the Greater
New Orleans German Shepherd Dog Obedience Training Club, Inc.
After training with the above clubs,  I decided to show my German
Shepherd, Duke, for the first time. Duke won the show with High in
Trial. This win hooked me forever.

I showed Duke through Novice A, winning High in Trial – Open A,
winning High in Trial - then in Utility winning High in Trial in every class.
I
accomplished this from Nov. 20th, 1965 to Nov. 21st, 1966. It normally
takes 2.5 to 3 years for the majority of handlers and their dogs to
accomplish this.

I continued showing Duke – he was ranked in the top 5 dogs in the
country for 5 consecutive years [1966-1970]. Duke also scored three
200 scores and 55 High in Trials.  Then in October of 1970 Duke
became the Obedience Victor of the German Shepherd Dog Club of
America, Inc. at the National Specialty, Denver Colorado. Duke was
also the two-time winner of the William C. Roos Memorial Trophy as
the Highest Scoring Dog Trial from the German Shepherd Dog Club of
Dallas.

After the many accomplishments that Duke and I achieved and my
Army training,  I  decided to become a professional dog trainer.
In late 1967, I became the training director of the Greater New Orleans
German Shepherd Dog Obedience Training Club, Inc. for 2 years.

I started Schillenkamp’s Obedience & Protection Training in 1969.
Over the years, I have trained over 15000  handlers and dogs in
obedience and 5000 handlers and dogs in protection. This also includes
law enforcement agencies.

Here are my personal accomplishments:

The majority of our students come out to our classes to obedience train
their dogs and to gain control over them. My knowledge and
experience will enable you to do this.  My record speaks for itself. No
other trainer in the Greater New Orleans area and/or surrounding
areas can top or come close to my record. Other trainers have tried to
copy or duplicate but none have come close.

My philosophy has always been to train the handler, not the dog.  By
doing this the handler has control over the dog for the rest of its life.
40 years of thinking this way has made my business successful and
this train of thought will continue.

"...In the Utility class of 16, three top
workers stood out and presented an
unusual situation to me for the first time in
my judging career:  namely, a three-way
tie for first with 198-1/2 each.  As they
worked off the tie, they came out
eventually in the following order:  First to 6
year old Schillenkamp Duke of Orleans,
owned and handled by Lawrence
Schillenkamp of New Orleans..."

O.T.C.H., Obedience Trial Champion, is
the highest title a dog can obtrain by
showing in obedience competition.

Our advanced students have also done
well over the years showing in obedience
competition. Out of six O.T.C.H.'s in the
state of Louisiana, we are proud to say
that three are from Schillenkamp. (One
Golden Retriever and two Poodles.)
